Even if it were not based on actual events, this book would still be difficult to put down. I went from reading as a curiosity to getting lost in the pages as it wove the stories of each character into plot lines that intersect at key points. I didn’t want to care about the people because I knew the circumstances were tragic, but the authors understood the universal human condition so well that it was vain for me to resist. I was hooked.

There is plenty of tension built into the story. Thankfully, the reader is allowed relax between those scenes. Without realizing it, you will become educated on everything from politics to the business of human trafficking and the philosophies that drive them.

This book doesn’t draw all of the conclusions for you or tell you what you ought to be doing about slavery in Sudan. Even some of the characters in the book are conflicted. Instead, the reader is challenged to decide for himself what path he will take. Will we ignore these things? If not what will we do?

My favorite scene was when a believing father prayed for God to grant the safe return of his daughter and the only person that could understand his words was a devout Muslim man. The reader is left to imagine the impact that this prayer and subsequent events must have had. There were other powerful scenes, but it would spoil the book if I shared.

You’ll hug your children tighter and pray more fervently after this read. Get your copy today.

CHURCH AT CANE CREEK CLEAN UP

In the first two days of May 2010, more than 13 inches of rain fell on middle Tennessee. Some areas reported more than 19 inches of rainfall. The Cumberland River reached nearly 12 feet above flood stage and crested at just under 52 feet before the waters finally began to recede. Hundreds of people were rescued from their homes by boat and canoe. Thousands of residents were displaced from their homes. Just over 30 lives were lost as a result.

In the midst of the loss, the Church at Cane Creek joined together to worship and give thanks for all that remained. Then, they all rolled up their sleeves and started putting things in order. LEAPING TO THE WRONG CONCLUSION

“I just don’t understand it,” cries the new cook, “this recipe is just AWFUL! HOW could they publish such a HORRIBLE recipe?”

“Did you cook it for the recommended time?”

“Well . . . no, since I didn’t have any eggs . . . “

“No eggs?”

“Yes, and I don’t like nuts, so I decided to leave those out . . . Of course, I had to boil it instead of baking because the oven doesn’t work right . . .”

“Of course. . .”

By this time, you might wonder how this creative chef ever figured there would be anything good to come of the effort.

Every day individuals look at a bottle of vitamins and decide that there’s no harm in taking just a few more capsules. If someone ignores the recommended dosage of three per day and takes 30, who is to blame when that person dies? Should the family and friends hold the supplement company responsible? Why not tell everyone how irresponsible it was of the company to sell such a ‘dangerous’ product?

The company didn’t cause the death any more than the recipe book cause the cooking catastrophe. If someone doesn’t follow the instructions, they assume the associated risk and are responsible for the outcome.

No Greater Joy Ministries is now in the middle of just such a storm.

A few years ago, a mother smothered her child to death. Investigators found a copy of To Train Up A Child in the home. In an effort to make some sense of a senseless crime, many were quick to try and tie these two things together. The truth is that To Train Up A Child has never promoted, suggested or hinted that a child should be smothered. It was ridiculous to link such a crime to the teachings of No Greater Joy Ministries.

Sadly, this year a 7 year old died. Her parents have been charged with murder and torture. In the home, there was a copy of To Train Up A Child. In the rush to decry this death, many have been quick to state that murder and torture are promoted and recommended within the text of this book, which is an absurd untruth.

Again, the critics have defied rules of logic and leapt to the wrong conclusion. Someone baked a cake without all of the ingredients. Someone is ignoring the instructions. . . . and THAT is a recipe for disaster.

DEBI PEARL’S NEWEST BOOK, LISTEN TO MY DREAM, A TRIBUTE TO DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR

Debi Pearl’s latest work is a children’s book entitled, LISTEN TO MY DREAM – a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Debi and her husband, Michael Pearl, worked together on the colorful illustrations which are accompanied by Debi’s lyrical prose. Children will love to hear the book read aloud. At the end of the book is a section that gives a summary the events surrounding the Civil Rights movement and Dr. King’s leadership role.

Debi Pearl lived in the Memphis area of Tennessee during the 1960’s. She experienced how the Jim Crow laws determined how people could interact. She witnessed the arguments, heard the speeches and saw the upheaval and turmoil that struck when Dr. King was murdered. She was there when the ‘Whites Only’ signs were finally taken down. Debi Pearl knew too well what life was like before Dr. King came on the scene.

Later she would tell these things to her children who wanted to know more about Dr. King. Her children hadn’t ever known what it meant to be forbidden to show kindness to someone of another race. Her children hadn’t known the reality of racial hatred. At the local library, they found only one child’s book that spoke of this man that altered history. It to fill this gap that Debi sat down and wrote LISTEN TO MY DREAM for her little ones more than 20 years ago. There was an earlier, unsuccessful attempt to publish the book, but it was soon left languishing in her office until another child found the book and began to ask about this man. The memories returned and Debi decided that it was time to pursue publishing so that another generation of children could hear about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

However, Dr. King was more than a man that changed society. He was a father, a husband, a preacher and a man. Michael, Debi’s husband, is also a preacher. I asked her, “How will you answer those that claim Dr. King taught things that are against your beliefs? DEBI PEARL'S, LISTEN TO MY DREAM, BECOMES REALITY

Why would a country grandmother publish a children's book about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?

Because that grandmother was a young woman when Dr. King was killed. She was caring for and ministering to other young men that were being called upon to risk their lives in the service of their country. Some of these men were wounded. If young Debi Pearl wanted to drive them for an outing, she found herself for the first time in her young life dealing with the reality of 'whites only' signs through the eyes of those servicemen. These same men that had fought and been wounded in service to their country were not welcomed at just ANY public place -- not in Memphis, TN during the 60's.

. . . but things were beginning to change. One man called to others to make a difference, to stand for what was right. This young woman saw the difference that this one man made. She was thrilled to hear his words of truth and challenge. It was on a trip to Tennessee, that an assassin's bullet found it's mark and ended the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

It was a stunning, senseless tragedy. Later, this same woman would teach her own children the realities of life as she had known it. A trip to the local library revealed that there were almost no books available about Dr. King. This wouldn't do!

So, Debi Pearl wrote her own book, a children's book, to remind her children of the difference a life well-lived can make. She printed a few hundred copies which were all sold at a book fair. Churches ordered hundreds more. Schools in Memphis placed an order for thousands to stock their libraries. However, Debi had unknowingly infringed some copyright laws. The book's production was halted. The few copies that remained were placed in storage. It didn't look like this dream would become a reality.

But this past year, a young boy found one of those forgotten copies. He pulled it out and began to ask Debi Pearl about this man.

The memories returned. Now a grandmother, Debi remembered the fervent desire she had for her children to know. Now, there was yet another generation of children that needed to hear about the Dream.

This time, proper channels were followed. The King Foundation gave its formal approval for the book's publication last month. GOD MADE JESUS TO BE SIN -- A sinner by faith

Kneeling in the garden, Jesus believed God and received the weight of sin.

God “made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in him (2 Cor. 5:21).”

God was willing to see Jesus as a sinner that He might be permitted to see us as righteousness. Jesus became what we are that we might become what He is. By the imputing act of God, He became a sinful son of man so we could become sinless sons of God. It was a trade. He traded His righteousness for our sin. He then bore the consequences of our sin before God so that we can bear the consequences of His righteousness before God. He ascended the hill of Calvary so we could ascend Mount Zion. The God who “calleth those things which be not as though they were” called His Son something He wasn’t—a sinner—so that He could call us something we are not—righteous. “Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin (Rom. 4:82).”

For those who believe, God sees no sin except that which is upon Jesus. God therefore punished the man Jesus until the penalty of our sin was exhausted and the justice of the law was fully satisfied.

Under the curse

Jesus hung on the cross, not as the accepted man, but as the cursed and rejected man. The human race was a mountain of condemned flesh. Jesus climbed to the top of the pile and received into his body the full blast of all God’s fury. He alone knows what it is to fall into the hands of the living God bearing the full penalty of sin. The curse of the law poured into Jesus until it was empty. The sword of justice was broken off in His holy flesh.

Resurrected

Under the watchful eye of the law, He was lowered to hell carrying the sin of the world. The law walked away from the execution fully satisfied. Viewing His execution, it closed its case against the human race.

But the Scripture quotes Jesus in that hour, “For thou will not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption (Psalm 16:10).”

When the justice of God and the demand of the law was fully expended, He exercised his rights as an overcomer and ascended, leaving the power of sin broken and death void of its sting.

A man who has paid for the crimes chargeable to him is released from prison. So God released the overcoming man from the prison house of death. In the resurrection, Jesus is the accepted Man, received into glory, seated on God’s right hand and given the promise of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:33)

If you believe this, rejoice that your sins are forgiven.

SOWING & REAPING THE REWARDS OF CHILD TRAINING

In June of 1995, Michael Pearl published a photo of his family taken in 1991 along with an article entitled “Of Utmost Concern.” By this point, he had seen the results of his child training in the adult lives of some of his children. In the article Michael reflected on the choices he made to forsake other activities for the calling of husband and father.

“Even before I was married, my occupation, financial security, ministry, personal fulfillment, all took third place to concerns for my future children. “What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?” Likewise, what does it profit a father if he gains the whole world and loses the souls of his children?”

A decade later, with their children grown, Michael and Debi ran across that article and reflected on the many milestones they had passed and how God had blessed those choices. They published another article entitled“Another Generation.”

“Life is a gift to be enjoyed with thanksgiving. All these children and grandchildren are the fruit of our love and God’s love! Deb and I have reached the reaping stage of life, and the fruit is sweet beyond belief.”

Five years later, in May of 2009, Michael further reflected in an article entitled “A Special Day.”

“When I reached the end of my row where I turn to make another pass, I looked across the yard and was blessed by the most beautiful sight. Not too far away, my wife was working in the herb garden, with several kids, none older than four years, working and playing around her. They were pulling weeds and placing stones. One was digging in the sand pile. The warm wind stirred their hair and clothes. They were having more fun than most people have in a month. . . .

In the meantime, we fathers need to be like Abraham. God chose him to be the father of a great nation for one virtue that he exercised. God said of him, “For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him” (Genesis 18:19).”

Many times as I read a passage, I would say to my husband, “I’m not going to include those verses in my book because if I do the ladies (of any religious group you can think of including my own) will not like my book or promote it.” My dear husband would say to me, “If God thought it was important enough to inspire it as part of his Word to us, then you should include it.” And so I would cringe and add one more controversial subject after another.

My series, Sin No More, does not teach that it is possible in this life to achieve a “state” whereby it is impossible to sin—as does the doctrine of sinless perfection. I teach that through our death with Christ and participation in his resurrection, it is possible in this life, moment by moment, temptation by temptation, to reckon one’s self dead indeed unto sin but alive unto God and, thereby, to fulfill Christ’s command to “sin no more”. There is no such condition as being unable to sin, but the Christian is able not to sin. Why does that bother some people? Shouldn’t we expect our ministers to obey God in all things, to walk in holiness both publicly and privately—all the time?

In this age of carelessness and antinomian Christianity, where preachers walk after the flesh, embezzle money, commit adultery or sodomy, and where worship leaders are found guilty of fornication, I am gratified to be accused of teaching a “heresy” that we should and can sin no more. It is an honor to be criticized for saying that I have been enjoying the blessing of the sanctifying power of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I have never said I am sinless. How could I? I have a wife and family who know me too well!

If my material is read and understood, the only thing you could accuse me of is helping people to stop sinning. So what is the problem? The women whose husbands have ceased pornography or adultery are not complaining about their husbands listening to the series “Sin No More.” The men who have overcome their anger and lust through reckoning themselves to be dead to sin are not accusing me of heresy. The murderers and rapists in prison who have listened to my teaching and then been released back onto the streets to sin no more are not accusing me of heresy. It is people who are comfortable with the modern belief and practice that we are all slaves to sin and cannot overcome temptations in this life, who are hasty to draw false conclusions about what I teach, simply based on the title of an audio message. I take the misinformed criticism as a compliment to my teaching, an honor to God, and a recommendation for the gospel of deliverance from sin.

CREATED TO BE HIS HELP MEET part I

Those lyrics express a sentiment to which many men relate. Men enjoy their freedom. So, it's not surprising when reviews of Created To Be His Help Meet come in that people become alarmed as they are told that men are categorized by narrow terms within its pages.

"My husband is insulted about the part in Created To Be His Help Meet that says there are three types of men. He doesn't like being labeled. Michael Pearl is obviously a command man and somehow Debi loves that, although I can't imagine how!"

Fair enough. Men desire more than formulaic service. They want an overflowing, freely given love -- not a love that gives measured and studied responses. The suggestion that a book would confine men and women within unnatural boundaries IS appalling!

Romance seems to be the theme of this issue in which Debi Pearl has an article on how to make sure none of the little sisters get left home languishing and longing for a mate. She gives advice to big brothers on that front.

WHY CONSERVATIVE HOMES ARE LOSING THEIR CHILDREN

A “good” life without any passion is not worth repeating. Love is always passionate. So is joy and peace. Longsuffering is passionate in its quiet reserve, taking into consideration the needs and feelings of others. Gentleness and goodness are virtues that point to God like a big red arrow. Faith is as lovely as a cherub’s wings. Meekness never allows others to feel inferior, and temperance is the ultimate demonstration of the power of God in one’s life. The fruit of the Spirit is attractive indeed. Teenagers are attracted to attractive people. If their parents are unattractive, they will fix their admiring gaze on someone who is attractive. A light-hearted spirit of joy and praise is attractive to everyone. Religious convictions worn only on the shirtsleeves are about as attractive as a man sneezing in your face.

The problem is that teenagers are not wise in discerning the difference between true joy and cheap laughter. But, they can easily discern when their parents don’t have any joy at all. And then, they come across a person of the world who is light-hearted and full of fun. What do you expect them to do? They don’t see the cynicism and rebellion behind the feigned joy. They just know that, for the first time in their lives, they have found a context for their passion. When they are with those kinds of people, they feel alive. They suddenly have hope that life is not always going to be dull and boring.

They find unconditional acceptance with the people of darkness, and since they have never really experienced God’s love, they think this is the love they have always missed. They will walk away from their miserable parents and right into the Devil’s den without any doubt that they have finally found true meaning in life. They are indeed fools, but their parents were foolishly naïve enough to believe that their teenagers would be content to accept the middle-of-the-road, principled but passionateless religion that never brought a shred of joy.

Parents’ ability to communicate their worldview to their children is mostly bound up in their personal relationship to each other. If Mother and Father have a romance that is visible, a joy that is uncontained, and a passion that is enviable, their children will want to travel the same road in hopes of reaping the same fruit in their own lives.
